Its strategic geographical location has urged the local government to set up 20-year program to promote its coastal area—Lampung Bay. So far the city has developed in line  with fast-moving era. Bandar Lampung, which used to be called Tanjungkarang and Telukbetung, a twin city. Tanjungkarang is located on a high-lying area, while the latter on a low-lying area very close to Lampung Bay. Even till today many people still use the name of Tanjungkarang and Telukbetung. With its population of approximately  800,000 people, Bandar Lampung consists of  13 districts, and 98 villages.  There are still more hilly areas, rice fields and plantations. In terms of economy, Bandar Lampung has marched forward with the existence of several shopping centers in the city. Now, there are Central Plaza, Plaza Lotus, Hypermart, Chandra and some other smaller shopping centers making Bandar Lampung a holiday city  for visitors from nearby districts, other cities of different provinces like Jakarta and Palembang. To improve its economy, Bandar Lampung is making an effort to develop  a coastal area called Water Front City (WFC). The development project plan is to complete the construction within the next 20 years. Now the project is still in the phase of designing project. There will be four coastal areas to be developed—Zone A, B, C, and D. Zone A is for residential areas, B for harbor, and industrial integrated areas , C and D  for integrated areas of business and tourism areas. The government plan to realize the big project is not an easy thing to do as the big population of coastal area will have to be relocated else where, and compensation cost to be given to them should also be borne by the government.
